Welcome

Invitation from the President and Dean

We are delighted to invite you to Perth, Western Australia, for the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM). The convenors, Drs Tanya Farrell and David Vyse, and their enthusiastic Perth-based Regional Organising Committee, have produced a fantastic program with the theme "Evolution: Grow, Develop, Thrive" that promises to educate and entertain you.

Scientific co-convenors, Associate Professor Tomás Corcoran and Professor Michael Paech, and FPM Scientific Convenor, Dr Max Majedi, have assembled a panel of world-renowned speakers from North America, Europe and Australasia and the scientific program will be covering a comprehensive range of topics in all areas of anaesthesia and pain medicine. The program promises to be innovative, challenging and stimulating, with something to suit all delegates.

The social program will be a highlight of the meeting with a focus on the fabulous wines and produce of Western Australia. The College Ceremony, with new Fellows from ANZCA and FPM being presented, is a wonderful chance for us all to join together, welcome new colleagues and catch up with old friends. Enjoy plentiful food and wine – come and see why Western Australia is so highly regarded for its produce. The combined ANZCA and FPM Trainee Luncheon will allow our trainees the opportunity to mingle with the leaders of our profession over a relaxed meal. The Gala Dinner will be a night of intrigue and fun – a fabulous finale for this wonderful conference!

The Faculty of Pain Medicine's Refresher Course Day is taking place on Friday, May 11. Organised by the FPM Organising Committee, the Refresher Course Day will provide specialists in anaesthesia and pain medicine alike with a great opportunity to update their knowledge.

Once again, we must thank our colleagues in the healthcare industry – without their generous support it would be difficult to run such a comprehensive meeting. Join us in thanking them at the HCI Reception on Sunday night.

We also thank in advance all the Fellows and others who have participated in organising the meeting and who will be part of the fantastic scientific program.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to sunny Perth from May 12-16, 2012 for what promises to be another very exciting ASM.

Invitation from the meeting convenors

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Regional Organising Committee, we warmly welcome you to participate in the 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Faculty of Pain Medicine in Perth. This meeting will be held at the world class Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 12-16, 2012.

Our scientific convenors have an exciting program planned which will appeal to anaesthetists, pain medicine specialists, intensivists and trainees alike, focusing in particular on the EVOLUTION of our craft and exploring cutting edge topics and ideas, providing you with an ideal opportunity to GROW, DEVELOP and THRIVE. The scientific program includes interesting plenary sessions, small group discussions and practical workshops as well as a number of innovations such as electronic format posters. The widely acclaimed TRIAD group from the Harvard Business School, specialising in negotiation, leadership and communication skills return to once again captivate the anaesthetic and pain medicine community. The newly featured 'masterclass' series brings experts together from other specialties with recent topics relevant to anaesthesia.

The Regional Organising Committee are planning to spoil you with entertainment and functions showcasing the food and wine that has made Western Australia famous and promise to continue the tradition of fun and camaraderie the ANZCA/FPM ASM is known for. In particular the College Ceremony and Reception will be highlighted this year in the manner enjoyed over the last two years but with a uniquely Western Australian feel, and the Gala dinner will be themed in such a way that will have you talking for years to come.

Of course, an event like this would not be possible without the sponsorship of the healthcare industry and we welcome our industry colleagues once again and look forward to the opportunity to experience an extensive healthcare exhibition.

May is a beautiful time of year to visit Perth, as the long hot months start to move into the cooler season. The outdoor lifestyle, relaxed alfresco culture, stunning golf courses and beautiful beaches are hard to match anywhere in the world. By visiting Perth, you will be standing on the doorstep of the world class Margaret River wine region, and the unforgettable Kimberley region. Please accept our invitation to visit one of the most liveable cities in the world, enjoy an innovative and relevant academic program, and launch into your most memorable holiday ever!

Invitation from the scientific convenors

Why not take a break and "go west" to participate in the ANZCA and FPM ASM in Perth in 2012?

We have embraced the theme "Evolution: Grow Develop Thrive" by developing a scientific program that highlights the expanding remit of our specialities, the emerging trends in the future of anaesthesia and pain medicine and the crucial roles we play as communicators, collaborators and researchers. In addition to our keynote speakers, we have a large number of high-quality speakers and facilitators from other medical specialties and non-medical professions who also fit this bill.

You can submit, for the first time, an ePoster; attend a 'masterclass' in perioperative care; interact with internationally acclaimed experts in communication from Harvard or in human crisis management from the aviation industry; hear about the acclaimed WA Blood Management Program; or visit our 'big animals' at Murdoch Veterinarian Hospital. Come early for the FPM Refresher Course Day or the inaugural Joint Trauma and Anaesthesia and Critical Care in Unusual and Transport Environments (ACCUTE) Special Interest Group (SIG) Meeting, or stay on for the Obstetric Anaesthesia SIG Meeting in Bunker Bay (near Margaret River), or West Australian Airway Group (WAAG) Meeting.

We look forward to your participation in what we are confident will be a truly memorable meeting.
